Question from Moira - Burial place of John Dudley

In her book 'Elizabeth and Leicester', Elizabeth Jenkins states that the body of John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland, was buried some while after his execution in the Beauchamp Chapel in St Mary's Church Warwick. I have visited the Beauchamp Chapel on several occasions, and, as far as I am aware, the only tombs there are those of Robert Dudley, Lettice Knollys, Robert Dudley (the 'noble impe'), Ambrose Dudley and Richard de Beauchamp. I had thought that John Dudley was buried in St Peter Ad Vincula at the Tower of London. Can anyone enlighten me?

Question from Analisa - Tudor History places in London

Question from Lisa - Building an authentic Tudor dollhouse

I'm starting to build a tudor dollhouse, and I have so many questions? I'm into making things look historically accurate, and this one is a 'country tudor' and can be found here

http://www.realgoodtoys.com/index.php?PATH=display.php&id=88&type=dollhouse

I think it's absolutely charming. instead of using shingles for the roof, I'm going to thatch it, and the timbers are going to be a darker brown (like the tar covered kind).

But how should I finish the walls on the inside? What kind of floor options do I have? How about the furnishings? Should the fireplace be made from brick or stone or just timbers? I'm probably going to have the fireplace cut out from the wall and then make it bump out into an added lean-to or closet or something of the likes. Is the inside of the house just the backside of wattle-and-daub or did they finish it? So many questions. And would someone in this house have a chamber pot, or just go outside in a covered hole in the ground? Anything would help! Thank you!

Question from Carlyn - Elizabeth I personal details

... a children's book I am writing called, "ROYAL RAUCOUS, royal rumors and myths throughout history." The age range is 7-12 and it is scheduled to be released in 2008 with Houghton Mifflin. I am giving you this background information because I know my questions are going to sound silly, but they are designed to get a younger audience interested in the people who changed history. (I call it: history lesson meets tabloid magazine). I have a page debunking myths about Elizabeth I. There are two that I am struggling with:

1. Is it true that Elizabeth was afraid of mice?

2. Is it true that Elizabeth swore like a truck driver and inherited her father's temper?

Question from PlusHeureuse - Primary sources on the Dissolution

I am doing an essay about the ease with which H VIII dissolved the monasteries but am struggling to find many actual sources to help me to support this, mostly information seems to be in the form of the opinions of historians from which is is difficult to discern any actual evidence. The arguments all seem to be pretty simple and obvious but i would really apprecaite some advice on where to look for evidence that might help me make this essay well supported and accurate. Thanks.

Question from Pat - A House for Catherine Parr

Several years ago, we were on a tour through the beautiful Cotswolds. We were taken by our tour guide to a private home in a lovely village for cream tea. The owner said that the house had been built as a gift to Catherine Parr from Henry VIII.
She also said that the ceiling in one of the rooms had been featured in "Architecural Digest". Does anyone know in what village this lovely home was located?

Question from Connie - Anne Boleyn's grave marker, etc.

Recently I was at the Tower of London and I (of course) visited the chapel of St.Peter Ad Vincula intent on seeing where Anne Boleyn was buried. Unfortunately I was not able to see if the spot was actually marked for her. I was wondering if there is any sort of marker naming her being buried there? Also two smaller questions. At Hampton Court, there is still a small A&H marker from when they were married. Why was it not removed when Henry destroyed all of her symbols. Lastly, some books i have been reading seem to indicate that Anne was assaulted when she was younger in France. Is there any truth to this?

Question from Lizze - Graduate schools

[this question has come up before, but there weren't many responses, so I thought it would post this one too -- Lara]

Question from Paul - Glove of Anne Boleyn

Dear all.
Many years ago, I remember walking around a stately home as a young boy, seeing as I remember a 6 fingered glove of Ann Boleyn's and the blood stained dress she was wearing when she was beheaded.
Returning to Coughton Court recently, where I believed this encounter to have occurred, neither object was there. There was Mary Queen of Scots Chemise that she was wearing at her beheading, but the only glove was either the young or old Pretender's, and it certainly didn't have 6 digits.
Can anyone please help as this is going to bother me for the rest of my life. I am always boring my wife about this glove, as I remember it was so small, and I thought that going to Coughton Court and showing her would finally prove it's existence. Obviously I got the execution dress wearer mixed up, but the glove of Ann Boleyn I know exists SOMEWHERE.
Thank you all.

Question from Hayley - Mary Seymour

Mary Seymour-the daughter of Katherine Parr by Thomas Seymour -was thought to have died in her teens which would partly explain her mysterious disappearance from History. However, about five years ago, I read that a Historian had uncovered evidence that she may well have survived and was fairly optimistic that he had even traced her living descendants . Do you know if his theory was proved correct?

Question from John - Information on Baoardo (source of description of Jane Grey)

I've tried every source I know of without success, so I am desperately tossing this out to the general public. On the subject of Lady Jane Grey: there is an oft-cited eye-witness physical description of her credited to a "Baoardo." He is variously described as a Genoan, a Florentine, a merchant, an ambassador, and a resident of London. JA Froude cited him as the author of a work published in Venice in 1558 and supposedly still in the Bodleian Library at Oxford. The librarians there have never heard of Baoardo or his book. Richard Davey states Baoardo wrote letters home to Genoa which are now deposited in a Genovese archive. I have searched every catalogue for every archive in Genoa without seeing Baoardo's name mentioned. I have searched the British Library, every major UK university online catalogue, World Cat, OCLC, Early English Books Online, and many others. None of these revealed any author named Baoardo or any work by him. Do any of the visitors to this site, by some remote chance, know where I can locate solid and reliable information on this elusive sixteenth-century Italian? Thank you!

I would be grateful if you could tell me the precise dates of Catheryn Parr's regency in the mid 1540's. I am doing a Masters Degree and my dissertation is on Levina Teerlinc. the actual dates are vital as it may prove that she was recruited by Catheryn and not Henry VIII, which all the art historians suggest.

Question from Victoria - Sleeping arrangements for Maids of Honor

What were the sleeping arrangments for 'maids of honor'? Were private rooms provided for each? If not would these young (and not so young) women share a large bed, as is depicted in so much fiction about the time period? I realize that situations would've changed as the individual became more 'senior' and with moves from place to place. Thanks!

Question from Jessica - More info on Boleyn and Howard families

I am very interested in the life of Anne Boleyn and as one of the sections of my work i am looking at her relationships with her family. However, I am struggling to get some of the events in Mary Boleyn's life into chronolgical order as different sources tend to present them in different orders.

I would very much like to know where to look for information on George and Mary Boleyn, as well the the Howard family generally.

But on a more immediate note would like to know the dates of Mary's relationship with the king and her marriage to Will Carey to get the relationship in better perpective.

Thanks

Question from Jessica - German forces at the Battle of Stoke

Hello,

I am doing some reenctment here in Germany together with my friend. We
are now planning to establish a second role and are therefore very
interested in the German contingent at the battle of Stoke.
Unfortunately, the War of Roses does not seem to be of that interest
here in Germany , so we can only find superficial information about that
issue.

I'd really apreciate if you could give us some information about Martin
Schwarz (often written as Swartz) and his German mercenaries or hints
where I should address to or good book recommendations.

kind regards

Jessica

Question from Micaela - Elizabeth I and Katherine Howard

i'm wondering if Elizabeth I knew that she was related to Katherine Howard, seeing as her mother Anne Boylen and Katherine Howard were first cousins so what that make Elizabeth I and Katherine Howard? Also some resources spell the names of all the Katherines as Catherine not Katherine,so I'm wondering which is the correct spelling? I'm a fifteen year old girl and am a history buff, I especially like learning about the Tudors and Stuart familes as those families represent my mother's family's native countries (I'm Canadian). I'm not doing a project for school -I'm in grade 8- but one of the sections of my Social Studies course has a lesson on the Tudors, so this might help a little with school if ever I decide to do a project on the Tudors!

Question from Sue - Henry's wives and live births

Editor's note: if you reply by email, please post your reply in the comments section too, so others can read it

I'm a professor of communication, and have recently finished The Six Wives of Henry VIII by Alison Weir. In reading that book, I was struck by how difficult it was for all of Henry VIII's wives --not just his first-- to give birth to live children. Katherine of Spain, for example, was pregnant a total of 10 times but only one child survived, her daughter Mary. Why was this?

Hey just doing the whole school project thing and just wondering if you could give me a brief baclround to my questions or if you had any really good sites that would help me find some stuff that would answer my focussing questions-
1- To what extent did social class and sex effect the work or play of Children during 1557-1668?
2- In what ways did the high death rate of minors effect the English Economy?
3- To what extent were the expectations of parents towards their children fulfilled during the time period 1557-1668?

Question from Lara (a different one!) - Lettice Knollys & Elizabeth in Tower

Does anybody know if Lettice Knollys was one of Elizabeth's ladies during her imprisonment in the Tower of London? I had always been under the impression that she and her family had fled to Germany during Mary I's reign, but the BBC drama "The Virgin Queen" and several historians claim that she had stayed in England with Elizabeth. So I was simply wondering if anybody really knows for sure or if its all conjecture. Is there any contemporary evidence to support either claim?

Did Queen Elizabeth know Amy Dudley? In the movie Elizabeth (1998) she didn't know Amy and had no idea that Robert Dudley was even married. But in Phillipa Gregory's book "The Virgin's Lover", Elizabeth knew Amy and even danced at thier wedding. I know that Gregory writes historical fiction, but I was wondering if there was any proof that Elizabeth knew Amy Dudley.

Question from Emily - Elizabeth of York = Queen of Hearts?

Hello! A very strange question.... I am getting a tattoo of the Queen of Hearts flower that she holds in her hand, and while researching the symbols of playing cards, I learned that the Queen of Hearts was believed by some to be Elizabeth of York. Is there any proof of this? If so, I would assume the flower is the Tudor flower in the crest, which does bear a resembalance to the flower on the card... Just thought I'd ask!
Thanks,
Emily

Question from Melissa - Medical reasons for the Wives child-bearing history

Where might I find information that might explain why Henry, with six wives, only fathered 3 children and why his wives suffered more than the usual number of miscarriages? Is there a modern take on a known medical condition that is something treatable today (RH factor, etc.) I know there is the "syphllis" theory, but I believe it has been addressed and dismissed.

Queen from Anna - Nationalism in Elizabeth's reign

How does Queen Elizabeth demonstrate nationalism during the renaissance?

Question from Stephanie on Elizabeth I

I love Elizabeth I and how she is an icon to us today and to look back onto the past at How they lived back then. Elizabeth I is a role model to me and to other Tudor fans out there I am sure she is to. I also love the other tudor rulers of that time period. Do you believe Elizabth I became pregnant during her teenage years or during her sister regime or her own regime?

Question from Elizabeth - Renaissance Queens

Editor's note: This question is usually a bit more broad that I would typically post, but if the commentors could recommend resources for Elizabeth to investigate, that would be great.

Question from Sara - Kat Ashley's appearance

What exactly did Kat Ashley look like? Like, what color hair did she have, how tall was she, and things like that. I know that portraits aren't always exactly truthful, they exaggerate to portray a person a certain way, and I can only find one portrait of her. I would really appreciate it if you could help me!

Question from Caitlin - Tudor places to visit

I am a HUGE fan of Tudor history (which I know is bizarre seeing as I live in Australia) - however - I am heading over to the UK (London) in around August next year as part of my GAP year and I was wondering if you had any recommended places to go and see, as most of the Tudor period buildings and places of interest are not open to the public or are not particularly relevant. I am particularly interested in Elizabeth I. If you had any suggestions I would be most grateful - I intend on going for two months so I'll have plenty of time.
Thanks
Caitlin

Updated post titles

If you've been here before, you've probably noticed that I've updated the post titles to include a little bit more about the subject, and not just the name of the person who submitted them. Hopefully this will be a bit more helpful.

Question from Jess - James' ascension to the throne

When Elizabeth died, did she decide to have James on the throne or did he just automatically assume it. I don't think she favored the Stuarts that much so it's kind of surprising that she would name one to the throne, although he was of her relation...
