Question from Kevin - Miscarriages of Elizabeth of York

Hello, I was hoping you could help me. I'm an amateur historian and read somewhere once that Elizabeth of York suffered (at least) two miscarriages, one between Arthur and Margaret and another in the 1490s. Do you or your readers perhaps know when this was? I've can't remember WHERE I saw it and it's driving me crazy. God bless

Question from Jacky - Windsor badge and motto

Voluptuous, fiery, capricious, cruel, and above all obstinate in his desires, he desires his place among the celebrated kings, and by the revolution which he made in the minds of his people, and by the scale which England learned under him to hold between the sovereigns. He took for motto a warrior tending his bow, with these words : "which I defend is master," a motto which his nation has sometimes rendered true, especially since his reign. https://fr.wikisource.org/wiki/L%E2%80%99Encyclop%C3%A9die/1re_%C3%A9dition/WINDSOR I can find no reference to this badge and this motto in the English texts that I consult. Who can help me ? Thanks in advance.

Question from Paul - Richard Rich

Richard Rich - information pertaining to 1st Baron Rich, amongst other things, Chancellor of the Court of Augmentations. I'm working on an MA in Tudor History. I'm exploring the role and influence of Richard Rich (one of the great villains of English history). I'm especially interested in the extent to which he directed the dissolution of religious houses (rather than simply following orders from others, e.g. Cromwell); the extent to which he worked with Thomas Audley and the nature of the relationship he had with the same; the possibility that he was defrauding the monarch and Exchequer at various times; the truth to the statement made in various online sources that, in contrast to his apparent Reforming agenda and actions, he was a 'lifelong Catholic' .... Biographical info is interesting and helpful, but more so are any ideas about original sources. Thank you.

Question from Ashley - Favorite Tudor authors and books

Hello fellow Tudor fans! Its been a long, long time since I stopped by but I wanted to take a brief moment and thank all of the regular/longtime contributors. I love coming back to read questions and answers, even if I don't have anything to add to the conversation lately. I have fallen out of the Tudor loop (I wandered off into American history for my M.A., if you're curious) but I was hoping to circle back around to my first historical love. Given how popular the era is with scholars and amateur historians/journalists, would anyone care to share their favorite authors and/or non-fiction books? For instance, Im currently re-reading David Starkey's Six Wives and I have Eric Ives biography of Anne Boleyn en route to me (my copy was unfortunately destroyed). I also have some Alison Weir books, but is she still kept at arms length from the serious scholars? I also have a book or two from Elizabeth Norton, but she also seems to be controversial in the scholarly world - she has the degree/training but some people really don't like her. Like I said, I'm just finding my footing again in Early Modern England and I don't want to waste my time, as it were, on authors who aren't taken seriously or who don't add anything to the historiography. I love the whole period, but I'm currently interested in the following ladies for an independent project: Anne Boleyn, Catherine Howard, Jane Grey, and Mary Queen of Scots. So, I would greatly appreciate any standout works or historian who specialize on them. Thank you so much!

Question from Linda - Exhumation of a daughter of Elizabeth Woodville

I read in Allison Weir's book about a beautiful daughter of E. Woodville being exhumed. Ms. Weir said they found her with blue eyes open and long blonde hair. Also said it was obvious she had been beautiful. Any information on that? Thank you Linda

Question from Arthur - Historical records of what today is called PTSD

I was wondering what is there if any that men returning from battles, might of had symptoms that we would regard today as PTSD? or any evidence for trauma related issue from other incidents in a persons history. I realize its a very hard thing to find evidence for, especially since it was unlikely to have recognised in any manner we do now. But my guess is that issues happened frequently and would of been regarded as madness perhaps. Its something I have done a little research on myself, but would the opinion of others. I also cannot find question on here that covers this in a precise way. Arthur

Sorry about the late comment approvals!

Hi y'all,

PhD Historian pointed out to me that some of the comments he had submitted hadn't been showing up and so I went in and found a lot of comments awaiting approval that I hadn't received the email notification for. (I have it set for Blogger to send me an email when a comment is submitted and then again when I approve it so I know it went through.) I'm not sure what happened, but I've set it up again with another of my email addresses and I'll keep an eye out on the Blogger dashboard as well.

Sorry to everyone who submitted a comment in the last few weeks and are just now seeing it show up! I'm hoping I didn't miss any legit comments in the sea of spam comments, so if something you submitted in the last month didn't post, try it again.

Thanks for your understanding!
Lara

** Update July 30 **

Looks like it's working again, finally! When I first was made aware of the problem I went over to the Blogger forums and found a lot of people having the same problem. Blogger posted about the problem and hasn't officially closed out thread (which would mean it should be fixed) but I tried something someone else in the thread suggested and it seems to be working. I'll keep manually checking for comments awaiting moderation for a while, just in case!

Question from Annie - Story of child falling from Queen's House at the Tower

Quick question - While visiting the tower a few years ago, I was told about a child who died in the Lieutenants Lodgings/Queen's House at some point. I think that the Yeoman said that she fell from one of the windows? Does anyone have any idea who that could have been or who her family was?

Question from David - Night bellman

In Tudor England the night bellman supposedly walked the streets, ringing his bell, crying the o'clock and adding, "All is well!" I have found contemporary references to some typical bellman activities, but none of him crying "All is well!" I wonder if this is a myth or whether anyone is aware of any evidence of this wording?

Question from Lily - Gender history dissertation ideas

Hi,

I'm currently a 2nd year History student and I have to submit my dissertation proposal by April.

However I'm really stuck between a couple of ideas. I'm particular interested in gender history and/or the tudors.

I was thinking along the lines of how the cultivation of the virgin image enhanced Elizabeth's monarchical authority? Something to do with Elizabeth or maybe was Elizabeth so successful because she was protestant with comparisons to her other female counterparts?

Or a bit different, I wanted to look at gender in Weimar Germany but I wouldn't know where to start.

If anyone has any suggestions that would be great!

Question from Julian - Records of Early Modern English

I would appreciate any referrals to audio recordings of Early Modern English that I could buy. I have been re-creating the Persona of Matthew Baker, Henry VII's "great Esquire" since 2003. Having now assembled clothing, accessories, and an exhibition encampment, I thought that this year before my Lady and I get too old, we would make an attempt at Early Modern English pronunciation, speeches, and phrasing. The vocabulary and the phrasing are enshrined in contemporary documents and we have assembled a considerable library of transcriptions to help us. But the SOUNDS? Where can we find some audio recordings to buy? I understand Professor David Crystal is considered the suprmeme Authority on this subject - but i cannot find any audio recordings on sale anywhere. perhaps it's GIGO on my IT searches.Help?

Question from Jina - Daughters of Elizabeth Tilney and Agnes Tilney

Good evening,
I am hoping to get some help.

Did both Elizabeth Tilney and Agnes Tilney (cousins that were married to Thomas Howard, 2nd Duke of Norfolk) have children named Elizabeth Howard?

I am trying to confirm which Elizabeth married Henry Radclyffe, 2nd Earl of Sussex. I also need to confirm they had a daughter together named Mary Grey Radclyffe.

I think the two Elizabeths are being confused leaving the date of death years before Mary Grey Radclyffe's birth.
