From where did members of the gentry get money to live off of?

Ownership of land was the principal source of income for all members of the gentry,aristocracy, nobility, and even royalty. All land owners collected rents and various kinds of fees from all of the people living on and working on the owner's land. The more estates one owned, the wealthier one was likely to be.
