Question from Lauren - Mary Tudor's tomb and the dissolution
Is it true that during the Dissolution of the Monasteries that Mary, sister of Henry VIII, had her tomb destroyed? Why would Henry VIII have allowed this?
Mary, Duchess of Suffolk was originally buried in Bury St Edmunds Abbey. When the abbey was dissolved, her remains were taken to St Mary's Church, Bury St Edmunds and she was given a new tomb there. So although the original tomb was destroyed, she was actually re-buried. There is a nice stained glass window in the church, commemorating her life above her tomb.
