In Tudor England the night bellman supposedly walked the streets, ringing his bell, crying the o'clock and adding, "All is well!" I have found contemporary references to some typical bellman activities, but none of him crying "All is well!" I wonder if this is a myth or whether anyone is aware of any evidence of this wording?
