Hi All,
I was wondering if anyone knew anything about the 'The Royall Book' - the book of court etiquette in place for Henry VII's court and probably written by Margaret Beaufort, his mother. It is also referred to as the 'The Book of the Royal Household'.
Is there a printed edition anywhere?
If not, does anyone know the archive where it, or a copy, might reside?
Thank you
Is that they same work that her "Ordinances" were in? Those have been the only ones I've been able to track down - the ones primarily concerned with Queen taking to her chamber and the christening of the baby. They were reprinted in Leland's Chronicle, vol. 4, starting at pg. 179, and it's available on Google books. It says there that the original is Harl. MS 6079.
ReplyDeleteEven if these aren't exactly what you're looking for, I'm glad you sent in the question since it prompted me to start looking and I've been curious about it!
Thanks Lara! I'll check that out. I'm wondering if the Tudor practice of waiting for marriages to be consummated until the girl was in her 15th year or had her period at least twice, may have originated with Margaret Beaufort and her experience of giving birth at 13.
ReplyDeleteAny thoughts welcome!
Hmmm.... I seem to be unable to find Leland's Chronicle on Google Books. Any chance of a link?
ReplyDeleteSorry, I should have given it's proper title since it would be a little hard to find otherwise!
ReplyDeleteHere you go: Joannis Lelandi Antiquarii de Rebus Britannicis Collectanea, Volume 4. That should bring it up.
And the page 179 is in the page numbers on the original printed pages in the scanned document, not the page number in the ebook.
Thanks! Found that! I just think there is more than those couple of chunks. If anyone knows if more of this has been printed, I'd appreciate the information.
