Question from Howard - William Howard

Hello. I am hoping someone may be able to shed some light on something for me.
I have been able to trace my family history back to Thomas Howard (1690-1753). However, every piece of research done by other people that I come across shows he is supposedly descended from Alexander Howard and Lydia Dubery. Alexander in turn is allegedly the son of William Howard Viscount of Escrick (1633-1694)

In all my extensive research into the Howard family I have never come across an Alexander. Does anybody have any information on this as to whether William Howard was married more than once or indeed had an illegitimate son not mentioned elsewhere.
thanks

Howard

  1. Just a shot in the dark, but have you tried the Borthwick Archives at the University of York? They probably have records of Howard baptisms. This part of Yorkshire is associated with the branch of the Howards residing at Castle Howard between York and Malton, and Escrick village is a few miles south of York.

  3. Hi Howard,

I am in exactly the same position. I am also trying to find the parentage of Alexander! Family legend has it that the eldest males in our family all have the middle name "Howard" because an ancestor was fathered by a Howard duke. I have confirmation from the Nottinghamshire archives of Alexander's marriage to Lydia in 1682, and his burial in Willoughby on the wolds in 1708 (which supports what all the other family trees on Ancestry suggest), but I have been unable to find evidence of his birth in 1657, or his parentage. Documentary confirmation of marriage and burial though does make me think there might be something in the Ancestry claims. Please let me know if you find anything out, and I will do likewise.
