Question from Ellie - Elizabeth of York's fashion and jewelry

What kind of clothes and jewellery would Elizabeth of York have worn?

I was wondering what kind of style dresses, headresses and jewellery Elizabeth of York would have worn, as there are descriptions of what people more of Catherine of Aragon's generation would have worn, but not the generation above her (that of Elizabeth of York).

Thank you!

  1. In the portraits I've seen, Elizabeth of York wore elongated gable style headdresses. She seemed to favor modest, square-cut necklines. In one portrait, she wears a large bejeweled (with what appear to be rubies) collar. In another she wears a pendant with a red jewel that seems to be cut in the shape of a flower, probably to symbolize the red rose of Lancaster. She is holding a white rose (of York) in this portrait.

This is all the information I have, I wish I could be of more help:)

  2. Some of the fabrics purchased for her are described in The Privy Purse Expenses of Elizabeth of York. It's available as a free download on Google Books and also on the Internet Archive. Here's a link to the latter:

  3. Here's the small gallery of images that I currently have relating to Elizabeth of York: http://tudorhistory.org/people/eyork/gallery.html

Eventually there will be more images and better versions of these if I can ever find more time to work on the database!
