Hi. Im 14 years old and Im doing an essay on Shakespeare's globe theatre.. I was wondering what was the worst job yu could get at the globe theatre and why was that .. ?? Thanks
I have to think the worst job at the original Globe Theater would have to have been cleaning up after the shows ... assuming much serious cleaning was actually done. Playgoers brought in food and drink, which was inevitably spilled in the jostling standing-only crowds of the pit and on the crowded benches of the decks. There were no public toilets, so it is likely that some people, men in particular, were less than selective about where they relieved themselves. And since the general standards of cleanliness and hygiene were much lower in the Tudor era than they are today, the theater was probably a stinking mess after any show. Someone must have been responsible for cleaning up at least some of the mess.
Honestly, I have no idea. But I found the online link for the theatre for you. It's www.sheakespeares-globe.org. You can probably find out from them. I imagine that they would know.
Great question! I personally think being a boy actor would be even worse than cleaning up after playgoers. If people didn’t like the play then you would get all that food and drink thrown in your face. And let’s not forget about being forced into a bone-crushing corset and enduring toxic lead make-up.
Personally, I would rather take my chances with the clean-up than lead poisoning.
