Question from Carolyn - Mary Tudor's ladies in waiting
I was interested in finding out the names of Mary Tudors ladies in waiting as one of my ancestors was reputed to have been one of them. Does anyone know their names or where I might find a list? Thank you very much. Best, Carolyn
You might try to track down a copy of Anne Somerset's "Ladies in Waiting - From the Tudors to the Present Day". It was published in 1984. (I've had it on my "to buy eventually" list for ages!)
If you are referring to Mary I (and not Henry VIII's sister, Mary, Duchess of Suffolk) then one of her ladies-in-waiting was Jane Dormer. Jane served in Mary's household before and after Mary became Queen of England. A manuscript biography of Jane (originally written in the seventeenth-century) was published in 1887. The complete citation is as follows:
The Life of Jane Dormer, Duchess of Feria by Henry Clifford (London: Burns and Oates, 1887).
It certainly included Anne Bourchier, countess of Essex and Anne Basset. Anyone in particular you were looking for? I would go to a university/national library and leaf through all the books they have on Mary.
I too believe one of my ancetors was a lady-in-waiting and would love to find out more. She was Elizabeth Tilney, lady-in-waiting to Lady Jane Grey. Does anyone know why she was chosen or any other information (how old was she). Have you had any luck Carolyn?
