Question from Sheila - The Tudor name

Why are the Tudor monarchs called the Tudors?

  1. The Tudor name (with various spellings) is a Welsh name that ended up as the last name of the Tudor monarch family through Owen Tudor (grandfather of Henry VII).

At the time in Wales, the patronymic system was used with "ab" or "ap" between names meaning "son of". Owen was the son of Meredudd (Meredith), who in turn was the son of Tudur. At some point his name was turned into Owen Tudor in English.
