Hi
For my homework (due on Monday 21st Nov!) I need to find two contempory comments supporting the nickname given to Mary 1 (Bloody Mary). These I have found.
However, I also need to find two not supporting the nickname. In other words, comments supporting Mary 1 herself. These I have a problem with and cannot find anywhere. Please could you help me???
Many thanks.
Alice Edwards
When Mary was a small princess, her father called her "The Pearl of England". This was at a time when Henry still had hopes for a male heir from Catherine of Aragon, and before 'the divorce' proceedings began.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure exactly what kind of comments you need, but here are a few sites you may find helpful:
ReplyDeleteThis page contains a cometmporary description of the queen. I couldn't tell if it had a quote you mind be able to use, but the author seems to be wuite fond on her, and he talks about how great her mind is.

This is a letter from Mary's mother, Catherine not long before her death. It wasn't written during Mary's reign, but it speaks a lot about the will of god.

Mary was a less bloody ruler than her father and many other rulers as well so she should not be given the name just because she was Catholic and the country is protestant or because she was a woman. She may have been a bloody ruler but no more than any other ruler. It is unfair to single her out and turn history against her.
