Family legend has it that the eldest males in our family all have the middle name "Howard" because an ancestor was fathered by a Howard duke. I have confirmation from the Nottinghamshire archives of Alexander's marriage to Lydia in 1682, and his burial in Willoughby on the wolds in 1708 (which supports what all the other family trees on Ancestry suggest), but I have been unable to find evidence of his birth in 1657, or his parentage. Documentary confirmation of marriage and burial though does make me think there might be something in the Ancestry claims. Please let me know if you find anything out, and I will do likewise. They probably have records of Howard baptisms. This part of Yorkshire is associated with the branch of the Howards residing at Castle Howard between York and Malton, and Escrick village is a few miles south of York.
