Question from Genna - Tips on making an easy gable hood for school project

Does anyone know where I can find good, easy instructions on how to make a gable hood? I am doing a project on Catherine of Aragon. I am in grade 8, and have made a dress and written a 2000 word essay, I just need a hood.

  1. "Easy" seems to be the difficult part! I've found a couple of tutorials, but they seem pretty involved.

This one might be a good starting point: http://www.diceyhome.free-online.co.uk/KatePages/Costuming/Katherine_of_Aragon/katherine_of_aragon_project.htm

You could glue on fabric instead of doing the whipstitching, etc.

This gallery might be helpful too:

    Good luck!

  2. From the University of Vermont website, step-by-step illustrated instructions, found by doing a Googel search using the phrase "constructing a gable hood."

  3. Hi Genna - not sure if this will be of use to you, but if you can get hold of a copy the a book called "The Tudor Tailor" by Ninya Mikhaila and Jane Malcolm-Davies they have patterns in there for all types of tudor clothing, including hoods. They may be a bit complex for what you want, but you should be able to simplify/adapt them to suit.

  4. I'll second the recommendation for The Tudor Tailor. It's a very interesting book, one that all Tudor afficionados would enjoy and find useful.
